Aquaculture is the process of agriculture in the ocean / water. The purpose of expanding aquaculture activity is to balance the seafood industry and marine ecosystem.
Coastal fisheries and deep sea fisheries contributes 26% of Malaysia’s fish production. Both capture fisheries and aquaculture contributed 1,415,211 mt and 362,155 mt to the country’s fish production. 43% of Malaysia aquaculture in 2009 are from freshwater aquaculture, equivalent to RM 738 million.
With an increase of global food demand of ten per cent between 2010 and 2015, Malaysia’s food production is lagging behind that of neighbouring countries. Under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), the government wants to ensure that food security objectives are met. With a growing population there is a need for up-scaling and increasing the productivity of agrofood production in Malaysia to increase self-sufficiency.
Malaysia has always been a net importer of fish in terms of volume. Fisheries precautionary measures have to be taken to prevent natural resources to be over-exploited. Corporate sector participation is stimulated to offer financial resources and management skills. The Malaysian fisheries industry, and in particular deep-sea fishing and aquaculture, are required to further grow into large-scale commercial industries to support Malaysia’s aim to reach high-income level by 2020. The government undertakes efforts to unify small-scale entrepreneurs and turn their businesses into large-scale, commercial business ventures.
